Ali Hussain is a doctoral candidate in the Islamic studies program at the University of Michigan. His research concentrates on the image of Jesus A.S. in the Muslim spiritual tradition; specifically, in the thought and works of the 13th century Sufi scholar Muhyiddin Ibn al-'Arabi. His interests also include the cultural challenges facing Islam and Muslims in America and importance of the liberal and fine arts for a sincere cultural dialogue between Muslims and people of other faiths. Over the years, I noticed that the political right had been deserted by Muslims and thus had to resort to its own, often times – but not always – misinformed, voices about who Muslims and Islam are. More importantly, I noticed an incursion upon the principles and values of the Muslim community in America.
