Local Website Experiments in the Transitioning Landscape of News Media

Just about nine months ago, Ann Arbor’s 174 year-old newspaper, The Ann Arbor News announced that it would be shutting its doors. As its replacement, the website AnnArbor.com was launched, providing the Ann Arbor community with a new, more interactive source for the area’s news.

Since it went live on Friday July 24, 2009, the website has been considered somewhat experimental, a new model in the rapidly changing world of journalism.

While some become skeptical upon hearing the phrase ‘community journalism,’ afraid that it may jeopardize journalistic integrity, Edward Vielmetti, AnnArbor.com’s Lead Blogger explained how the structure of the organization actually works.

“All of our traditional news coverage is done by paid reporters. So if a story reads like it comes from the news side of the world, it comes from that side of the staff. The bloggers and contributors, some of whom are paid, many of whom are not, primarily contribute to the community side of what we’re doing. So they’re writing things about food or writing things about parenting or such things where they have direct experience, even if they’re not journalists and such.”
