I didn’t even know what a “Four Loko” was until I entered my freshmen year here, at the University of Michigan. I spent my first few weeks at campus hearing stories of “how messed up” my fellow students became on the alcoholic beverage which combined high amounts of caffeine and alcohol.
Then on a fateful October day, the time came for me to try my first Four Loko. It was my first Michigan vs. Michigan State football game and I was drinking anything that came in my way. Someone handed me a Four Loko and I had almost all of it. At first it was great, and then as time went on, I regretted having the drink at all.
Soon after, the Food and Drug Administration banned the drink and the outrage was incredible here on campus. Students rushed to the liquor stores to stock up on their favorite drink before there were not any left. Then, in December 2010, Phusion Projects, the creators of Four Loko re-released the product without caffeine and two other chemicals, taurine and guarana, according to USA Today College.
Now, the popular drink is facing more pressure from a recent campaign that is lobbying for Phusion Projects to redesign the can in which Four Loko is sold. The campaign wants new labels for the can advertising EXACTLY how much alcohol content is in the drink, and that it cannot be consumed in one sitting, according to USA Today College.
It looks like it is finally time to say goodbye to Four Loko: first no caffeine and now “mommy proof” labels are sure to kill sales of this once popular drinks.
