Music Review: And the Giraffe’s Something for Someone

by Hannah Weiner on November 1, 2011

Folk music reminds me of my childhood; my parents insisted on me falling asleep to Cat Stevens, James Taylor, and the occasional Fleetwood Mac. Throughout the years I’ve discovered my love for the relaxing aura of the folk genre, delving into Iron & Wine, Bon Iver, etc.

Something for Someone by And the Giraffe is yet another folk album I can relax to.  The album is frustratingly short, though for what songs it contains, it’s definitely attention-grabbing for folk lovers. “Still” would fit perfectly in the soundtrack of “Garden State;” it’s perfectly mellow yet the melody is entrancing enough to keep your ears interested in the music, it’s not just background noise. “Magic B” for some reason reminds me of “Kandi” by One EskimO (a fantastic song, if you haven’t heard it). “Welshrats” is my favorite song on the album, it’s a bit James Vincent McMorrow-esque with regards to its fuzzy calming vocals and the soothing acoustic in the background.

The album is definitely worth a listen (at least a download and inclusion on your “sleep” playlist on iTunes).
